Chapter Ten

“Hey, X-treme Dating. Over here.”

“Whoo, hoo, hoo. Check me out.”

The line of young people waiting outside the Pier Seven nightclub stretched the length of the street and around the corner. Word had leaked to the community that a segment of X-treme Dating was being filmed that night. As a result, everyone in line had attempted to out-dress—or in some cases, under-dress—the other. And their antics, geared at winning them fifteen minutes of fame, would shame or horrify most of their parents.

Park had never witnessed anything like it. She, Justin, Natasha, and Grant were being escorted to the front of the line by the club’s head bouncer, a dour-faced giant in a three-piece suit. He looked strong enough to bench press a pickup truck and mean enough to card his own grandmother. His steely gaze lit on each person they passed, challenging them to sneak by him. Park predicted there would be few brave or stupid enough to take up the challenge.

Grant panned the camera down the line. The crowd exploded into yet another boisterous display of activity, some of it downright indecent. Or so Park thought. Standards of acceptability were obviously different in Southern California than Tucson. Way different.

She kept one eye trained on the concrete sidewalk in front of her. It had taken a good hour to regain her land legs after docking that afternoon, and she still wasn’t steady. The slinky red sandals she’d chosen to wear at the last minute weren’t helping. One misstep and she’d pitch face first onto the ground.

Justin walked beside her, head lowered, feet dragging, and his hands stuffed in his pockets. If his pasty pallor was any indication, he had yet to recover from his bout of seasickness, intensified by the super-spiced fish he’d eaten. Somehow he’d managed to dress up for the occasion, proving once again where his priorities lay.

They’d hardly spoken on the drive there, which suited Park fine. Her feelings toward her date had altered one-hundred and eighty degrees since overhearing his cell phone conversation with the mysterious woman. Before, she’d considered him a potentially nice guy. Now she considered him potentially dangerous.

Natasha had made arrangements for a limo. The extra effort, not to mention expense, was wasted on Park and Justin. The chilled champagne remained unopened and the caviar uneaten. Not that either of them would have voluntarily consumed raw fish eggs without the added inducement of a prize.

At last their group reached the front entrance of the nightclub. For one of the hottest spots in the city, the building exterior was amazingly unpretentious. The bouncer unhooked a velvet rope blocking the steps and gestured for them to proceed. A cheer went up from the crowd. Grant made a final sweep with the camera, and fifty hands instantly shot into the air.

Taking the steps too quickly, he came to a sudden stop directly behind Park. For several delicious seconds, she felt the hard length of his body pressed against her backside. The zing of sexual attraction weakened her already unsteady knees to the edge of collapse.
